‘Cockles’ stranded on Pulau Ketam are actually mussels – DOF

The recent phenomenon of thousands of “cockles” stranded on Pulau Ketam which had gone viral social media, were actually a brown-coloured mussel from the species Modiulos sp or better known as ‘siput rantai’.

The Department of Fisheries said that the species lived in highly productive estuaries and seaside areas, rich with floating organic matter, and adapted to salinity (salt concentration) changes in an area.
